Growing up in a family that included several medical professionals first sparked Mohamed Berrada’s interest in healthcare. But rather than pursue a clinical career, he chose to study and work on the broader aspects of this critical industry. His passion for policy led him to establish Kearney’s healthcare practice in the Middle East and Africa to make a real difference for Kearney clients and society at large.
In leading Kearney’s work on healthcare reform across the region, Mohamed focuses on strategy and public policy in healthcare, public-private partnerships, large-scale transformations, economic development, and human capital development. “Understanding both the public and private sectors helps shape policy in a better way,” he says. “You are much closer to reality.”
Mohamed strives to raise awareness about mental health, which he feels too often takes a back seat to the physiological aspects of healthcare. “Nearly half of all people suffer from some form of mental health disorder during their life,” he says. “The stigma and discrimination that mental health patients face are borne out of lack of knowledge, misconceptions, or embarrassment, all of which pose significant barriers to progress.”
Mohamed’s most memorable engagements include developing national sector strategies for specialized care, implementing new chronic model pathways, establishing a social insurance body, and designing a national localization strategy for pharmaceuticals and medical technology.
